REVIEW

I will begin by saying that although I really enjoyed this book I can see it isn't going to be for everyone. There are heavy religious undertones which are only to be expected from an author whose father and husband are both preachers. Although the religious aspect is fundamental to the story-line it doesn't advocate a particular belief system, which was refreshing. Both sides of the theological debate were equally depicted giving the reader plenty of food for thought.

Told in dual first person narrative from the perspective of Brielle and Jake. Brielle has just returned to her home town following a tragedy in New York. This tragedy is shrouded in mystery,  cleverly woven into the narrative adding an ingenious plot twist as all the elements are revealed. Having lost her mother at an early age, Brielle doesn't have much faith in God.  Jake is the opposite, he oozes faith and calm, the mysterious new boy at school Brielle is drawn to.  

As the story unfolds fate and destiny are examined closely, showing beautifully the way free-will and external influences can alter the path we choose to take with our lives. The writing style is vividly descriptive balancing deep philosophical debates with touches of humor and engaging characters. 

The clever weaving of the Old Testament into the plot gave depth to the story as a whole. The theological debate within the story was very interesting; begging the question I am sure most of us have thought at one point or another -  why does God let some people suffer or die while others that may deserve to suffer don't.   Is there a bigger picture, does God have some sort of plan, do people move onto another plain where they have a purpose to fulfill??? The examination of faith was skilfully depicted no matter what your belief system. 

I especially liked the way fear was portrayed, used by evil as a means of control. How fear holds people back in more ways than we fully comprehend at the time, how it can paralyze and corrupt. 

I have to say the ending was really unexpected and has completely left me longing to know what happens next. I have become invested Brielle and Jake's future. I cannot believe I have to wait an entire year to find out what happens.

The book picks up the plot from the exact point Original Sin (review HERE) finishes, there is very little recapping so it is essential to read the previous books first in order to fully appreciate the plot and interactions. The amount of guilt the three main characters apportion to themselves at the start was a little annoying but understandable. Each of them feeling responsible for their current situation. Touches of sarcastic humor lighten the guilt ridden tension.

One of the things that stand out with this series for me is Lisa's ability to tell the story from 3 different viewpoints, each picking up the story a the exact point the previous character left it off. I did feel that Gabe abused his position of protector in a way. Although Frannie needed his  calming presence and her need to gain peace where contributing factors; it is Gabe's actions that cross the acceptable boundary. It made me angry as I think that men that take advantage of women who are in a vulnerable state are little more than scum.

There are plenty of twists and turns alongside an explosion of revelations that leave you wondering why you didn't pick up on these points earlier as the clues are there and the way the plot unraveled made perfect sense.

The way in which the characters both main and peripheral grow and develop is a credit to Lisa's writing talent. Although some aspects of the plot were unexpected they worked brilliantly in context of the story as a whole tying every single outstanding plot thread together.

The action and emotion kept the pace flowing quickly, there were times when I couldn't turn the pages fast enough in order to find out what happened next. 

I cannot help comparing the religious aspects to the Fallen series by Lauren Kate (big fan here) re-enforcing the idea that not everything can be viewed in black and white there are shades of grey in everything and everyone. The main thing is everyone has a choice, we choose the type of person we want to be not matter what circumstances we have been raised in.

This book really does provide a fantastic end to the trilogy. I loved it.

REVIEW

So you may have already guessed that I am a complete sucker for angel books. This was a definite case of love at first sight of that cover. Although I did enjoy the story as a whole I can honestly say that there was nothing new here at all and this is reflected in my rating. Don't get me wrong its a fun, light read that is a terrific way of whiling away a few hours and I am definitely interested to see how the story progresses in the next book. 

The dual first person narrative works really well and I found it interesting that the authors are Mother and Son, they are very much in tune as writers and the characters they have created are believable and realistic (well as realistic as angels get anyway).

The best way I can think to describe this book is a mash-up of angel paranormal romance alongside a Da Vinci Code type thriller, with warring angel factions, secret divisions within the factions looking for peace with Claire as a pivotal piece to both sides, creates an engaging plot. The romantic element is compelling; the chemistry between  Claire and Alex added to the overall effect of the plot. The history and origin of the Nephilim is well depicted and believable. There is plenty of action to keep the plot flowing smoothly.

As I said earlier my rating is a reflection that although the book is a nice way to spend a few hours there is nothing new here at all. This does not mean that I'm ready to give up on the series just yet. I'd be interested to see just where this one is going.

Rapture continues straight on from the end of Passion (review HERE) without a break, there is very little recapping so you really need to have read the books in order to fully appreciate the plot. Daniel and Luce had 9 days in order to locate the sight of The Fall in order to stop Lucifer from restarting history to his liking. The revelations come thick and fast accompanied by stunning imagery, fast paced action and the most  beautiful depiction of love that there has ever been. Lauren Kate's use of simile, metaphor and personification bring the world of Daniel and Luce to vivid life within the imagination.

The defining feature of this series and especially this book for me was the way faith, hope and love are the cornerstones that strong foundations should be built on. I don't meant his in a religious sense. Faith is shown in many different forms, faith in yourself to overcome difficulties; the belief that you can do anything. Faith in your friends to be there when it counts, to support and guide you. Faith that true love does exist, love that has the power to make you a better person for it and that you can conquer anything that is thrown in your way. The detail and emotion Lauren Kate has managed to convey in her writing is like being wrapped in a cocoon, warm and cosy til you metamorphasize into something better than you were just from having followed Daniel and Luce's journey.

Lauren depicts love in such a way that it was like being surrounded by light, fluffy clouds drawing feelings of being warm, protected, secure and comfortable *sigh* isn't that how love should be *double sigh*

There are some astounding twists that I honestly just did not see coming at all (my lips are sealed) I actually sat on the sofa making very good goldfish impression at one point. Completely unexpected but completely brilliant.

The way God and religion are portrayed was eye-opening but essentially made so much sense. Raising questions like: If angels were made in God's image the same as mankind does that mean that Lucifer is an embodiment of all the bad things in God?? Just wondering and yes my mind works in strange ways [ ; D ]

The journey and ultimately the end of this series is in one word PERFECT. It was so emotional, I just didn't want it to end. I sat with tears streaming down my face; I still can't believe it's all over. One thing I would like is maybe a spin-off series featuring Cam, I would really love to know what he gets up to next.

Let me start by saying that there could have been no other possible ending for his series. Although in some ways it can be seen as predictable the accomplishment in bringing all the elements together for the ending was unexpected and should not be diminished. As I stated in my review of Exile (HERE)  all the clues are placed within the narrative to pick up on, oh the benefit of hindsight is a powerful thing.

My favorite thing about this book was the way  'humans' are depicted. Generally dismissed by both angels and demons as inferior; their ingenuity, resourcefulness, adaptability and perseverance are the qualities lacking in the angels and demons; it is these human qualities that really shine through the narrative aiding the fight for good exponentially.

Seeing the world as the devils playground is shudder inducing yet it is nice in a way to be able to lay the blame of the worlds atrocities on the shoulders of an external entity rather than mankind's ability to destroy, hate and hurt.

The way in which the peripheral characters from the previous books that were able to 'see' Mercy for who she really was plays a vital part in the plot in this book. Providing a very clever way of advancing the plot, tying up loose plot threads and developing all the characters. It also highlighted the point that Mercy had touched the lives of the people around her at a fundamental level.

The different countries used in the setting were richly described adding to the world building. It really did feel as if you were seeing the countries through the eyes of the characters themselves. It really did bring the saying ' You can travel the world in a book' to technicolor life. The inclusion of the native Peruvian tribe added depth to the narrative. The detail into their lifestyle and belief system was a comprehensive addition to both the imagery and the plot.

Although I really enjoyed the series I can appreciate the complaints about the large holes within the plot. For one thing Mercy is initially portrayed as Luc's consort in all things evil for which she has to atone. Althugh this plot thread is used extensively in the first two books it did fizzle out in the latter part of the series replaced by a promise that Luc made Mercy before The Fall that binds them together. Again this is another gap in the plot as the promise that binds Luc to Mercy is never fully revealed. Also the reason for keeping Mercy's true name hidden is not fully explained, yes we know something bad will happen but what, to who and why?

So yes the series isn't perfect but it is heart-warming, action packed and optimistic for the future of mankind.  For these reason alone its well worth reading.

Following the dramatic ending of Exile (Review HERE) there isn't much time to place Mercy into a new host. When Mercy awakens in the body of Russian super-model Irina she has regained most of her memory. Her own thoughts and feelings although she enigma of Luc and why she is on earth is yet to be revealed. The background detailing into Mercy's character, angels and the interactions of angels, fallen ones and humans really filled out the plot.

 
The insight into the fashion industry especially the life of a super-model was amazing. No wonder some models act like such divas when people fawn over themselves to so anything for you no matter how degrading. How every little detail of your life is made public, true or not, all on display for media vultures to pick over. Plus the tedium they have to endure would be enough to drive me over the edge.

The theme of looks being deceiving is dramatically portrayed. The imagery within this book was outstanding, not only the glitz and glamor of the fashion industry hiding depravity.The use of the weather reflecting the actions and battle of good versus evil was a stroke of imagery genius.

Revelations come thick and fast in this book, the action speeds up as Mercy remembers more and more of her own history. The background into Mercy's confinement and the necessity of keeping her hidden from Luc comes together piece by piece. Sympathy for Mercy abounds through these revelations,  trapped in other peoples bodies to atone for something she had no control over, her only 'sin' being naivety especially where Luc was concerned. 

The introduction of two pivotal characters in this book provided a fresh appreciation of the main characters and their actions as viewed from an outside perspective. I especially adored Gia, Irina's PA, although Irina treats her like dirt she comes bouncing back, not because she adores Irina its because she is an absolute professional. Gia is tough and genuinely likeable especially for her straight forwardness. Gia is very perceptive and identifies Mercy underneath Irina pretty quickly. Her efficiency is something I covet (lol), her decency shines through as well as her optimism (although she tries to hide it under a coating of snark)  Gia really is a terrific character and addition to the book as a whole.

This is probably my favorite book in the series so far.

I must start by saying that this is book 2 in the series and this review may therefore contain spoilers to Book 1 Mercy (Review HERE). I will also state that I am writing this review after finishing the whole series, therefore I have added insight into the plot due to the benefit of hindsight ( my superpower of need alongside time travel [ ; D ] ) 

There is very important information revealed in this book, something that doesn't automatically click into place until the very end. In this book Mercy finds herself in the body of Lela, desperately unhappy with her life, stuck in a dead end job taking care of her terminally ill mother. Underneath all the misery and despair in Lela's life you can tell that she generally cares for people. Mercy heightens this quality and it is heart warming to follow just how Mercy touches peoples lives. Improving not only the quality of life but putting their futures back on track, in essence saving them from themselves. It is this essential goodness that enables people to see beneath the surface of the body Mercy is inhabiting to the real her.

Although Mercy is starting to remember fragments of 'her' life there are still huge gaps in her memory. She is still unaware of what she truly is and therefore who Luc is. The introduction of more of the archangels and background details as to their powers and place in the world not just guarding Mercy, really add depth to the plot. The connection and similarity between Ryan and Luc has yet to be fully explored, keeping the continual tension within the plot.

The seedier side of life is unerringly depicted and unfortunately all to realistic. The inner workings of a psychopaths mind were disturbingly portrayed. The undercurrent of evil being hidden is a continuing theme flowing through the books.

The way random acts of kindness benefit society as a whole via their ripple effect was amazing to picture similar to that of the butterfly effect (the theoretical physics not the movie) A truly fantastic concept that would benefit the world if it was put into practice. 

There is still so much more to be revealed about Mercy herself, the circumstances of her 'imprisonment', her relationships and the battle of good versus evil even on the smallest scale. A terrific addition to the series.

Review: A Temptation of Angels by Michelle Zink

REVIEW

There can be no doubt that I adore Michelle Zink's writing style, the words have a lovely lyrical feel to them almost taking on a life of their own to flow off the page. The reason for not giving 5/5 is: 

1) My copy from Netgalley cut out the f's in the sentences making reading a little hard going at times 

2) This really needs to be picked up in the UK

 3) I want a sequel [ : D ] 

An engrossing tale of romance and friendship with steampunkesque elements woven seamlessly together. The historical setting aided the world building and re-enforced the imagery.

As a general rule I loath love triangles, saying that this one simply worked. Torn between the super hot Griffin and the brooding Raum, Helen has to reconcile current events with the images of her childhood friend and unresolved emotions from this time. Although my heart belonged to Griffin I could understand the draw to Raum. Truly if events had been different and had not affected Raum so adversely then the relationship between Helen and Raum is easy to picture and understand.

The chemistry between Helen and Griffin was like an entity all by itself. The way in which Griffin softens as a character due to his relationship with Helen was beautifully depicted. Having built up barriers to protect himself emotionally following his parents murder, Griffin is unprepared when each one comes crashing down with Helen. It was truly heart warming to witness. Griffin's vulnerable side is depicted superbly with his care of a kitten. 

The plot twists were thrilling - the battle of good versus evil - angels protecting the Earth including the records of past, present and future provided stunning imagery. 

One thing I love about Michelle Zink's books is her ability to provide strong female characters, brilliant role models; intelligent, decisive, huge amounts of inner strength and not afraid to go against convention yet still compassionate, loving with a touch of vulnerability. They aren't your average damsels in distress, capable of looking after themselves and their loved ones. They are equals in their relationships.

Although the ending did tie up all of the details beautifully there is a lot of scope in which to progress the story. I can honestly imagine this as a TV series. I am really hoping that there will be more books featuring Griffin and Helen.

REVIEW

I am a huge fan of the Fallen series as you may already know. I jumped about with sheer delight when I received this book. It is beautiful feeding my cover love. Plus the cover comes to life (more details of that later) but what an awesome idea.

Fallen in Love is a collection of short stories featuring the peripheral characters from the main books. Providing valuable insight into the characters themselves as well as how their relationships have shaped their decisions, actions  and personalities in the other time periods already portrayed in the main plot. Although these are individual character stories they still revolve around the main story-line featuring Daniel and Luce.

Nice recaps within the narrative keep the story fresh in the imagination while simultaneously progressing each individual story. Providing a clever way in which to relate aspects back to the central story-line within the series. The way in which all the characters converged at the same time and place enriched the story-line as a whole.

In reality not all relationships have a 'happily ever after', the inclusion of heartbreak along with the 'true love' ideal provides a nice balance. Although the notion of 'true love' together with soul-mates is the basis of the story  and therefore is the plot equivalent of 'a moth to a flame' for the characters. Providing a source of hope to all of them (and me).

The way in which Valentine's Day celebrations were depicted in Medieval times gave them far more credence than the commercially exploited day we celebrate now. A day of feasting, dancing and festivities sounds so much better than one filled with overpriced cards and flowers. The glorious descriptive writing brings the Medieval World to life within the imagination.

Hints are subtlety placed within the narrative to gear the main plot towards its conclusion in Rapture. Fallen in Love provides a great addition to the Fallen series and is a MUST for all Fallen fans.

I don’t write to music. I’m too easily influenced; if the mood of the music changes, so does the mood of my writing. Can’t have that. But I do like to listen to music to get me in the mood for the book. If I can I like to write in the Pepperdine University library, which is about a half hour from my house, a lovely drive through a windy canyon road that finally opens up at the ocean. I love this drive. It calms me, helps me to prepare myself to write, let go of all the mundane things that are going on in my life and think about my story. I almost always listen to a CD on this drive.

My Hallowed CD had a lot of songs on it, too many to share hear, but I’ll give you a taste. I’ll try to keep the spoilery bits of what I would say about the songs out. (and the super spoilery songs from my playlist out, too. You can find the Grooveshark version of this playlist over on my blog, www.cynthiahand.blogspot.com, in the sidebar, bright pink.) REVIEW

I was truly captivated by Unearthly (review here) I was on a countdown from the minute I finished reading Unearthly for the next installment. Believe me the wait was worth it, I may even goes as far as to say that this book was even better than the first.

The story picks up shortly after the mountain fire and the revelations that brought forth. Clara's first person narrative and inner monologues provided light, refreshing entertainment among the main parts of the plot. The way in which the story unfolded was quite simply a compelling page turner. As a reader you just can't help but become personally invested in the outcome. Each character has their own unique draw, there are no clearly defined sides even with the forces of good and evil, I felt as if there must be reasons behind all of the actions. This is one story where snippets of the history of the characters are woven into the main plot adding depth to the story. While not everything is revealed in one hit, the snippets are are divulged enhance and progress the plot. 

I am not a great fan of love triangles but this one just worked. I found myself unable to choose this time between Tucker and Christian. Christian's character development during this book was outstanding. I could feel the attraction to both of them. My sympathies were with Clara at having to make such tough decisions.     

The mystery surrounding the angels 'purpose' slowly and tantalizingly began to be revealed. There are some surprising twists and turns that were totally unexpected taking the plot to another dimension. The themes of death and bereavement alongside the afterlife were beautifully dealt with no matter what your belief system. The ideal that love survives death although sad brings it's own kind of peace. The philosophy of being able to live without regret added to the dynamics of the story on multi-levels. Ingenious use of the Old Testament re-enforce these themes without being what I would classify as 'religious' . The imagery was stunning and very easy to picture within the imagination. 

I have to tell you that I spent most of the latter half of this book with tears silently rolling down my cheeks. Such powerful and captivating writing to provoke such emotion. On a personal note the way in which death was portrayed was easy to relate to and took me back to when my mother passed away. If you have personally witnessed someone die then you can understand the imagery of the body being an empty shell or simply a vessel for your soul/life essence what ever you want to call it. 

A surprising side effect of this book was that at the end of it I felt emotionally wrung out. Such a beautiful book in so many unexpected ways. Cynthia Hand is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. I, for one, am eagerly anticipating the next book.

REVIEW

I have to start by saying that I really wish I hadn't waited so long to write the review after reading the book as I feel as if I am not going to do it justice now. This is the second book in the series and therefore the review may contain spoilers for the first book.

Let me just say that if you know me at all by now you will know that I have a HUGE thing for Angels, Demons and the Battle of Good Versus Evil. This book just takes that concept above and beyond. Oh My Gosh...it is soooo good. Put all your preconceptions about angels and demons to one side as they are about to be turned inside out and upside down.

I loved how the title isn't just a title but part of the story with dual meaning and implications to pick up on within the narrative. So clever. The use of religious characters to emphasise the story was quite astounding and really did add to the plot in so many ways. It is so hard not to give spoilers for this book. 

I am a Luc girl all the way in this book, bad boy turned good by the power of LOVE and so so so hot *swoon*. The relationship between Luc and Frannie hits another level in this book, I was so glad that there was not much Gabe hoovering about. The chemistry between Luc and Frannie literally scorched through the pages; not for the younger teen as there are some very HOT scenes *steam under collar time*.  

Although it isn't just the physical chemistry that makes the relationship between Luc and Frannie so amazing, although it definitely helps, there is a strong emotional bond there. Luc's character development blew me away, I actually sobbed at the parts when he shows his emotions. At other times too but I am not going to tell you what.

Don't get the wrong idea here this book isn't all about romance there is far more to the plot than that. Mix in the battle of good versus evil with some really amazing plot twits. Action, adventure, suspense, misdirection all culminate together to make a breath taking story and fast paced plot.  

I have seen this book described as SEDUCTIVE and that is exactly what it is. The first book was such a hard act to follow but Lisa Desrochers managed to top and put a cherry on it too. My only gripe is with the cover please do not let it put you off reading it.

There is one heck of a cliffhanger at the end of this book; I seriously cannot wait for the third and final book.

Review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

REVIEW:

I will be honest with you I don't usually read fantasy, it takes me a while to get used to the strange names but I am so glad I read this book. The writing style is just so gloriously descriptive it surrounds your imagination totally. I had absolutely no problem picturing the world Laini Taylor wove in the story. A dual world kept apart by a thin veil accessed through the doors around the world. So powerful it felt real.

Written in third person narrative but focalized from Karou perspective. Instinctively the reader is aware that Karou is different and not just because of her blue hair, yet I have to admit I did feel protective of her from the beginning. I adored the way in which Karou didn't lie yet her delivery of the truth and nonchalance make it seem as if she is being sarcastic and we all know how much I love sarcasm. And I have to say how totally awesome to have naturally blue hair, can you guess what colour I would want to be - go on I am sure you can [ : D ] Karou's honesty even in describing herself 'foot smell' brought a smile to my face as I was reading.

I am going to rave about the writing in this book, it is just absolutely gorgeous, sadly there were a great many snakes in the first section of the book *shudders* but even I as a total snake hater have to admit that their descriptions were beautiful (if shudder inducing). I would even go so far as to say that the words flowed sensuously off the page like a waterfall to drench my imagination creating a reservoir filled with three dimensional imagery. The emotion builds sweeping you along with it like surfing the crest of a wave (or what I imagine it would be like as I haven't surfed). The story flows beautifully and the plot unravels smoothly, go back to my waterfall analogue here [ : D ] I just want to use the words STUNNING WRITING a hundred times.

There a large number of plot threads making the 3rd person narrator a necessity. Subtle plot hints are placed sporadically to be picked up on. The book is divided into sections and the progression of both the plot and the characters from one section to the next is breath-taking. The relationships and interactions are so well developed not just in the main characters but in the peripheral ones as well really adding to the dynamics of the story. I found myself thinking of Romeo and Juliet with the relationship between Karou and Akiva, something that only escalated the further into the story I got. The use of 'Rapture' within the story was ironic considering the events in the news earlier this year and had me sniggering into the book.

Personally, I thought there was quite an important message woven into the fantasy - today we live in a world of conflict and war; could we imagine and hope for a world at peace. No differentiation between races. all are equal, socially and economically. No one race should be superior.

Utterly brilliant how the plot threads weave together to produce a magnificent tapestry of a story. the way in which the title was placed into the plot was astounding. Literally jaw dropping moments as the story unfolded. I had to go to check when the next book is due for publication.

For someone who doesn't generally 'do' fantasy this book has carried me away with its beautiful writing. I cannot wait to find out what happens next.

Review:

I have been anxiously awaiting the publication of this book since it came onto my radar some months ago. I adored Eden Maguire's Beautiful Dead series and when I found out that this book had a Rock Star as a central character, you should have heard me squee. 

Written in first person narrative from Tania's perspective. From the very beginning you can tell that there is a lot going on under the surface with Tania, although she seems very laid-back and a bit of a daydreamer, there is far more to her than that. She has a wonderful family unit even though her parents at absent for a large part of the time due to their jobs. She has grown up independent and level headed, she knows exactly who she is OR does she? She is a wonderfully supportive and loyal friend, and has a fantastic mutually caring two-way relationship with her boyfriend Orlando. At first I was unsure if he really cared for her deeply or if she was some sort of trophy girlfriend; but as the plot unfolded the depth of their relationship really shines through the narrative.

I really loved how an English language 101 lesson was incorporated into the narrative comparing and contrasting with Tania's Fathers use of language and his Eastern European heritage ( my quest for education via osmosis achieved [ : D ] ). The use of different religions and philosophies within the story was a stroke of genius, adding depth to the plot. I am a sucker for the giant battle of good versus evil and the way in which this one was portrayed was ingenious. Although the use of snake imagery really does make me *shudder*.

The writing style is sensory encompassing and so beautifully descriptive, making it very easy to conjure up Tania's world within the imagination. The comparisons of the fire descriptions and their use within the story brought to mind images of Hell on Earth. The use of the Pheonix rising from the ashes brought thoughts of re-incarnation, both a good thing and a bad thing when looked at via this storyline. The action and pacing of the plot were very smoothly controlled. Background details, interesting realistic elements and random fascinating facts were all woven together to give a dynamic storyline. Amazing use of analogues to fairytales within the book expand the plot further, a piece of writing brilliance.

As I have already stated one of the main characters in this book is a Rock Star so I can’t do this review without mentioning the awesome use of music references and original song lyrics within the book, not only did they re-enforce the plot but they developed it further. I am sure we can all relate to the mesmerising effect that some music has. Alongside the wild abandon of a live concert, incredibly portrayed in the narrative.

This book really is a brilliant start to a new series for Eden Maguire. I cannot wait for the second book to see just what happens next. Although there wasn’t a cliff-hanger of an ending exactly I just feel as if I have to know what happens to Tania next, where the characters themselves are heading.

So if like me you love an epic battle of good versus evil this book is the one for you.
