Musical Moments: Guest Post: The Soundtrack to My Life by Celia Frost

It is my pleasure to welcome Celia Frost to Book Angel Booktopia today to talk about the music that means so much to her and helped her through some really tough times. If you haven't read her story yet you really, really need to. Review here.

THE UNDERTONES – TEENAGE KICKS

I’d never been into the stuff all the other girls liked. I wanted to be- believe me. When you feel like a freak all you want to be able to do is melt into the crowd. But all those pretty boy bands and throw away pop just did nothing for me. In fact, music hadn’t meant anything to me until I heard this song, late one night, on a radio show. It completely blew me away!! I dare you not to want to jump up and down when you hear this!

BLONDIE- HANGING ON THE TELEPHONE

Just hearing that dialling tone at the beginning of this record makes my heart beat quicker. Debbie Harry- snarling, pouting, peroxide blonde goddess!! I have a Blondie poster on my bedroom wall and one of The Clash and The Sex Pistols! Every time Mum drags me off to another city I make sure those posters come with me; I never leave them behind. My bedrooms might keep changing but once I get those posters up, the place feels a bit more like mine.

THE CLASH- I FOUGHT THE LAW

You’ve got to listen to this at full blast or you’re wasting your time. You’ve got to let it shake your insides, travel through you like an electric shock. This is what I love about Punk. Mum says I’m decades too young to know anything about it but I know how it makes me feel. Those three minute songs are short, sharp shocks of pure joy to me. The way I see it, punks were without boundaries, without rules, without fear- everything I’ve never be able to be.

TINIE TEMPAH- WRITTEN IN THE STARS

I suppose I’d better put one of Sol’s favourite’s in. I’m not a fan of all his stuff but he’s my best mate and I know he’ll be chuffed to see it here. Just as long as he doesn’t get the wrong idea- No, Sol, you haven’t converted me, but I can’t help smiling when I hear this song. It makes me think of us, lying on the stone slabs, soaking up the scorching sun, ipod on, Sol with one ear piece in, me with the other, Sol singing completely out of tune!! If it wasn’t for that boy I don’t know what I would do. We can go and hide from the world in the best place ever. No one can touch us when we’re there.

THEY CAN’T TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME- FRANK SINATRA

I’m putting this one in for my Mum. We’re not getting on at the moment (that’s putting it mildly). It’s hard to get on with someone who has done what she has. She deserves to suffer and sometimes I want to hate her, but I know it’s not her fault- she’s crazy, she needs help! Anyway, I like this song, it reminds me of when I was little, before I went to school. Mum never let me out of her sight. She’d take me along on all her cleaning jobs and she’d dance around all those offices with her duster, singing. She knew it made me laugh – even with everything she’s done to me I still can’t help loving her, just don’t tell her, okay?
